Summer Floods Cost Britain $6.2 Billion

A Global Warming Harbinger?

By Dan Shapley

Flooding in Britain this summer cost $6.2 billion, making 2007 the most expensive year for natural disasters, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Britain and Europe aren't the only regions facing excessive costs — in both dollars and lives — from severe flooding this year. Monsoons were especially strong, and deadly, in India, Pakistan and neighboring countries; Bangladesh and Vietnam saw repeated flooding events; and Papua New Guinea is still recovering from excessive rainfall after tropical storm Guba. Just to name a few.

The United Nations has warned that flooding damage will increase dramatically in the coming years as global warming causes both sea level rise and more intense bursts of rainfall.
