BP was among the first big oil companies to jump on the "trust us, we love the environment, too" bandwagon, with its "Beyond Petroleum" campaign touting renewable and alternative energy research and investment.
Now, according to the Daily Telegraph, BP is considering a nearly $5 billion sale of its Alternative Energy division.
Not surprisingly, the rationale given by the BP chief was all money and no soul.
"We will be looking at how best we can realise that growing value [of the Alternative Energy division] for our shareholders,'' Chief executive Tony Hayward told the Telegraph.
He even managed to promise that selling its alternative energy division, which specializes in solar, wind and biofuel operations, would not lessen the company's commitment to alternative energy. How is that?
