Slaughterhouse to Close After Recall

WSJ: Largest U.S. Meat Recall Will End Hallmark/Westland

By Dan Shapley

After remaining shuttered for the better part of February, Hallmark/Westland will likely go out of business, following the largest beef recall in U.S. history, the Wall Street Journal reported today.

The 143-million-pound recall was prompted by undercover footage of a California slaughterhouse where cows were being forced to stand using forklifts or other extraordinary means, which is illegal. So-called "downer" cows are more likely to be sick or contaminated with bacteria, so only cows healthy enough to walk on their own are supposed to be slaughtered for human consumption.

If it does close, Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing would go in the same way that Topps Meat did last fall, just a week after it announced what was then the second-largest beef recall in U.S. history.
