The recovery from devastating Category 4 Cyclone Sidr could take months, but the cry for help from Bangladesh has been heard. Nations around the world have pledged $140 million in support, and a variety of aid agencies are working on relief efforts.

With more than 3,400 people confirmed dead, and the toll expected to rise as high as 10,000 or even 15,000, the need is clearly great. More than 3 million people were affected, including 300,000 left homeless.

Bangladesh has a history of being hit by, and recovering from, deadly cyclones. Experts have warned that global warming will only make Bangladesh more susceptible to destructive storms, as sea level rise leads to additional flooding in the low-lying delta nation.
