Notice the extremely black water and destruction behind this woman.

Both these men lived in the same house with their families. This is all that remains.

The top of the broken tree on the men’s left is how high they said the tidal surge was.

This woman lost her husband in a different storm one month before Sidr. During Sidr she was swept into a tree, where she lost two of her three children. The boy on her left is her only family left. She also lost all her livestock, which is extremely valuable in an agrarian society. Death tolls for women were much higher, as often they cannot enter cyclone shelters for cultural reasons: They are responsible for all elder and young family members, and they are also responsible for all family belongings, including the house. A husband can actually charge his wife for anything lost!
