Parts of Arkansas could see flooding unlike any recorded today, forecasters have warned, according to the Associated Press.

The White River, like others across the central United States, is swollen by a week of heavy rains, and the slug of water from the deluge upstream is making its way down river.

Flood warnings and watches are in effect in 13 states, from Texas to Ohio.

At least 17 deaths have been blamed on the heavy rains and floods.

Some scientists have warned that precipitation will come in more intense bursts as the climate warms.
