In a recent New York Times article about online green and ethical business shopping portal Abe's Market, co-founder Richard Demb said, "People want to buy from other people. There are very few opportunities to meet the people who make your products. We look at Abe's Market as a limitless farmers' market."

It's a strategy some are calling "my story marketing," and it's about connecting consumers to producers. We see this in the personal stories of the namesake's family members on bottles of Kathy's Family personal care products, or in the stories of individual cocoa farmers in marketing by Divine Chocolate.

For its part, Chicago-based Abe's Market serves as a virtual marketplace to bring together conscious small businesses from all over. Producers aren't required to sell exclusively through Abe's, but they can benefit from the portal's marketing savvy and online presence. According to the Times, sales are growing rapidly, though the site is still niche.
