As choking smog smothered Beijing and shut down air traffic yesterday, major international concern grew over the feasibility of next year's Olympic Games, according to the South China Morning Post.

Tension peaked between Beijing government officials and the International Olympic Committee when the committee verbalized a fear that Beijing’s air will be unsafe for many of the 2008 Olympic events. The International Olympic Committee said it needs to know how Beijing's choking pollution will be monitored to ensure athletes' safety.

Beijing’s government claims it is making strong efforts to reduce heavy industry and limit car use. The International Olympic Committee, however, wonders if it is too late and China may be fighting a losing battle.
