Cool and cloudy weather helped thousands of firefighters beat back Southern California wildfires yesterday, reported the LA Times. Despite progress, firefighters continue to battle lingering flare-ups and nine smaller blazes threatening hundreds of homes.
According to Reuters, some forecasters predict the fire-triggering blasts of Santa Ana winds could return, although perhaps not as severely as last week's. Nonetheless, displaced Southern California residents ventured back through blistered neighborhoods to see if their homes were standing or destroyed.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the state would give cash grants of up to $10,000 to some of those who lost their homes or belongings or needed medical treatment.
