Is Global Warming Changing the Autumn Leaf Season? Vote Here.

Tonight, an entire city is walking the walk as individuals, restaurants, shops and other merchants pledge to turn off all non-essential lights for one hour, 8-9 PM Pacific Time. Called Lights Out San Francisco, it marks the first time the citizens of a major US city takes a united stand about their concerns about global warming.

Organized by Lights Out San Francisco, a local Bay Area grassroots group made up of environmentalists, writers, technologists and educators, the event is meant to focus attention on both climate change and conservation. It is the brainstorm of former Google employee Nate Tyler and is modeled after a similar event held earlier in Australia.

Lights Out San Francisco has assembled an impressive line up of supporters, including the local energy company, Pacific Gas and Electric, which is distributing thousands of the more energy efficient compact fluorescent light blubs. Major landmarks such as the famous TransAmerica Tower, the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and even Alcatraz plan to flip the switch and go dark. Parties and celebrations both large and small are being planned city wide.

Going lights-out for an hour as a way to take a stand is an idea that will spread across America next year. Organizers from coast to coast are making plans for Lights Out America, scheduled for the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2008
