IBM Institutes Mainframe "Gas Meter"

The Biggest Computers Now Show Real-Time Energy Usage

By Dan Shapley

IBM Corp. has made a real-time energy efficiency breakthrough that shows users of its z9 mainframe how much electricity they are using in real time.

Part of IBM's "Big Green" energy efficiency initiative -- a play on the company's nickname, Big Blue -- the New York-based company calls it "gas gauge program."

Users of innovative electricity meters will be familiar with the concept. When you see exactly how much money you're spending in real-time, you're more apt to institute conservation measures. Not using that light? If you know exactly what it costs you, you'll shut it off.

Mainframes can use significant amounts of energy, and the gas gauge is designed to give systems administrators the information they need to make good choices when it comes to energy usage.
