Wal-Mart is taking another step in transforming its tremendous market clout into green action that earns dividends for the environment.
This time, it's a bag made from 85% recycled material that holds more than two times as much as a check-out plastic bag, according to the Morning News. The largest company in the world will sell the bags for $1 and accept them for recycling afterward.
Wal-Mart is also prodding its suppliers to reduce waste and save energy, just as Wal-Mart has recently done, saving itself millions in energy and materials costs. This move has the potential to inspire a new ethic among millions of everyday Americans who might not otherwise be compelled to adopt one of the simplest forms of environmentalism: Reusing bags, instead of trashing a wad after every shopping trip.
