Vietnam Floods Called Worst in Two Decades

Flooding in Wake of Typhoon Lekima Leaves Dozens Dead

By Dan Shapley

Dozens of people -- as many as 61, according to some reports this morning -- have died in Vietnam, as the surge of flood water following Typhoon Lekima continues to swell.

Some rivers were running at all-time highs, washing out several bridges and damaging tens of thousands of homes.

The flooding has been called the worst in almost 20 years.

The connection between hurricane frequency or intensity and global warming is still hotly debated among scientists. The United Nations has warned, however, that the world should expect more extreme weather events -- including flooding and heat waves -- because of global warming's affect on the climate. A warmer climate stores more energy and can hold more water, releasing both with more furious consequences.
