Harmony Gold Mining, the South African company with 3,000 employees trapped underground, is one of the world's biggest gold producers. Like most mining operations in South Africa, the easy to get to gold has long been dug out. But with world-wide demand for gold increasing, and a bull-market for gold sending prices soaring as investors' jitters rock the equity markets, companies such as Harmony have to drill ever deeper to reach the gold. And therein the danger, both to workers and to the environment.
