Beef Recall Expands: What You Need To Know
21.7 Million Pounds of Ground Beef Suspected of Food Poisoning; 25 Sick
Reported illnesses and an additional positive test for E. coli by the New York Health Department has resulted in a New Jersey processor, Topps Meat Company, to dramaticallay expand their recall of frozen ground beef. In this latest recall, announced on Saturday, September 29, nearly 22 million pounds of ground beef are involved.
The strain of E. Coli involved in the recall is O157:H7, which the USDA says is a potentially deadly strain.
Where:
According to the USDA, there are currently 25 illnesses under investigation in the following states:
Connecticut
Florida
Indiana
Maine
New Jersey
New York
Ohio
Pennsylvania

Each recalled package of frozen ground beef bears the establishment number "EXT.9748" inside the USDA mark of inspection as well as a sell-by date between "Sep 25 07 and Sep 25 08.
Packages with these numbers should be thrown out by consumers, who are advised to check meats currently in their refrigerator or freezer.

Ground beef in the current recall are marketed under a huge number of different brand names, as is typical in giant "agribusiness" type beef production.
