Tropical Depression Nears Landfall in Mexico

If it Reaches Tropical Storm Strength, it Would be Called Lorenzo

A Tropical Depression formed in the Gulf of Mexico overnight and is headed for landfall in Mexico sometime early Friday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. If it forms tropical storm-force winds -- a better than 30% chance -- it would be named Lorenzo, the 12th named storm of the season.

A hurricane hunter aircraft exploring tropical depression 13, however, found the storm still weak. Maximum sustained winds are at 30 mph -- still shy of the 39-mph winds that characterize a tropical storm.
