Nine in 10 people say it is necessary to address global warming and two in three say major steps need to be taken very soon, according to a new BBC World Service poll of 22,000 people in 21 countries. The results represent a groundswell of support, as the United Nations continues discussions on a post-Kyoto Protocol scheme to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A final agreement is expected in Bali in December. Meanwhile, President Bush is also meeting with the leaders of the top polluting nations this week, in an effort to set up a second scheme of "aspirational goals" that would not be as strict as those being considered by the U.N. The Clinton Global Initiative is also meeting this week, with a major emphasis on global warming, and its support of private-sector initiatives are being highlighted. Clearly, world leaders have the support of the broad support of the world community for action.
