If you've heard of Carl Muecke it's probably because of the controversy he drew as a federal judge. He was even burned in effigy by loggers in 1995 after he ruled that the U.S. Forest Service had to follow the Endangered Species Act and consider habitat for the spotted owl before allowing logging in Southwest forests.
Muecke died Friday in his sleep, apparently at peace with his decisions, according to the Los Angeles Times. He was also involved in several courageous decisions involving civil rights, school desegregation, and prisoner's rights. May he rest (as he seems to be) in peace.
