California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger echoed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Monday when he called on the nations of the world to take action needed to slow global warming. "The time has come to stop looking back at the Kyoto Protocol," Schwarzenegger said, according to Reuters. "It is time to stop looking back in blame or suspicion ... The rich nations and the poor nations have different responsibilities, but one responsibility we all have is action."

Schwarzenegger knows something about action, and never fails to bring a bit of Hollywood to his performances on the political stage. He's made a name for himself as an environmental leader cut from a new mold: A pro-technology, pro-economy, pro-fun environmentalism that plays well with the public. With both former President Clinton and President Bush holding conferences of their own this week on climate change, and Al Gore set to speak also today at the UN, there will be plenty of room for heroes. It's certainly crisis time, when that kind of leadership is called for.
