Several groups have coalesced around the idea of drafting Al Gore to run for president of the United States. The new group, America for Gore, now includes some smaller groups that had made waves in political circles -- including DraftGore.com, AlGore.org, Netroots for Gore, GoreHub.com, Goreganic.com and RunGoreRun.com.
The former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate has repeatedly said his focus is on the state of the world's climate, and he's proving to be a very effective campaigner. Most recently, he made headlines in Australia for a near-endorsement of a prime ministerial challenger who has made strong statements about global warming policy. He seems to be able to command an audience with just about any group.
Today, he's in New York to speak to an assembly of the United Nations, which has convened the largest group of world leaders ever to discuss climate change. The America for Gore coalition is launching a new website -- www.AmericaforGore.org -- to establish a central location on the web for the coordination of this grassroots effort.
