Three of every four large companies that responded to a survey from the Carbon Disclosure Project has implemented a plan to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions, in order to lessen its contribution to global warming. The latest report, the group's fifth, will be launched today in New York, with President Bill Clinton, Fox News and Wall Street Journal media mogul Rupert Murdoch and German Chancellor Angela Merkel set to speak.
The event coincides with the largest international meeting on global warming, convened by the United Nations as a prelude to upcoming talks in Bali that will define a new path for action on global warming. Also this week, the Clinton Global Initiative will convene for discussions of climate, among other issues, and President Bush will host a meeting of the world's top polluters for discussions about aspirational climate goals.
The week's schedule holds promise that the United States will join some of its most influential companies, and the leaders of other industrialized nations, in setting a clear and aggressive agenda for curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
