Typhoon Wipha Could Be Most Destructive Storm of Decade

Strong Category 4 Hurricane Headed for Landfall Near Shanghai, China

Multispectral Satellite Image of Typhoon Wipha Joint Typhoon Warning Center Chinese state-run media has called Typhoon Wipha the strongest in a decade, as it bears down on the Chinese coast. As many as 14 million people were being moved out of Shanghai and neighboring cities in advance of the hurricane, according to the Los Angeles Times. Residents of northern Taiwan braced for strong winds and flooding.

The Joint Tsunami Warning Center calls it a "Super Typhoon." On the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, its 150 mph sustained winds rate as a strong Category 4 storm -- the world's 13th this year. It brought heavy rains and floods to Okinawa, according to Japanese Press, and was the 12th typhoon to hit the islands this year.
