Tropical Depression Humberto, which hit the Texas coast as a Category 1 hurricane yesterday morning, leading to one death there, is moving through Louisiana and Mississippi today, dropping enough rain to cause significant flooding. In Texas, East Bay Bayou was soaked with a whopping 14 inches of rain, and the Mesonet Winnie Wetlands saw more than 10.

Otherwise, storm totals to date have ranged from 1.5 inches in parts of Mississippi to a little more than two inches in New Orleans to about 6.5 in Beaumont City, Texas. The storm is expected to drop another one to two inches as it continues its path. At 5 a.m. EDT, the remnants of Hurricane Humberto were about 10 miles northwest of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The tropical depression is moving toward the Northeast at about 12 mph, and its maximum sustained winds are at 20 mph, with some higher gusts. This is the third hurricane of the season, and the eight named storm. The ninth, Tropical Storm Ingrid, formed overnight deep in the Atlantic. The latest federal forecast calls for:

  • 13-16 named storms
  • 7-9 hurricanes
  • 3-5 major hurricanes, rated Category 3 or higher
