By Dan Shapley

A NOAA Hurricane Hunter plan is flying toward Tropical Depression 8 to investigate the tropical depression tonight, as it moves slowly west-northwestward over the Atlantic some 865 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

The chance of the disturbance taking shape as a tropical storm has diminished over the past day or so, but the National Hurricane Center believes it could still form a tropical storm within 12 to 24 hours. If it does become a tropical storm, it would be named Ingrid, the ninth named storm of the season.

The latest federral forecast calls for:

  • 13-16 named storms
  • 7-9 hurricanes
  • 3-5 major hurricanes, rated Category 3 or higher
