The carpet will be red, as usual (not green) but the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards will be as green as it has ever been tonight. FOX and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences launched a “Green with Emmy” campaign to reduce the carbon footprint of the ceremony in order to minimize its contribution to global warming.

Among the strategies: Using more recyclable materials, swapping hybrid and other alternative fuel vehicles for gas guzzlers, drawing electricity from solar panels and other renewable sources, and serving locally grown and organic foods. The Green with Emmy campaign encompasses all major Television Academy and Fox events, including the Primetime Emmy nominations announcement ceremony, the 59th Primetime Emmys arrivals and telecast, the Creative Arts Emmys, the Governors balls, and the Fox Primetime Emmy Awards after-party.

Some other notable steps:

  • The stage sets are reusable rentals; the carpeting on stage and backstage is made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • Biofuel generators, which use organic oils such as soybean or canola, are being used as backup during the production of the show.
  • Lighting on and off stage has been reduced by 15 percent.
  • Potted plants will be re-used, and cut flowers will be donated to local hospitals.
  • Leftover food will be donated to the Midnight Mission.
