Social change, sustainability. When the first Body Shop opened in England in 1976, these words were not part of the everyday beauty lexicon. But thanks to the success of Anita Roddick, and her ubiquitous shops called The Body Shop, environmentally friendly, humane beauty products gained mainstream appeal.

Monday, Anita Roddick, the business woman responsible for founding and growing The Body Shop, died of a serious brain hemorrhage. Mourned by green activists as well as consumers of fair trade and sustainable body and beauty preparations, Roddick was considered ahead of her time and was named a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.
