Dan Shapley / News Editor The Atlantic Hurricane Season has already produced records, with Hurricanes Dean and Felix making landfall within a couple days of each other -- the only time two Category 5 storms have made landfall in the same season.
Now, Tropical Storm Gabrielle, the seventh named storm, is nearing the coast of North Carolina. Sept. 10 has been, over time, the average peak of the hurricane season. In August, national hurricane forecasters predicted that the season would produce between 13 and 16 named storms, with seven to nine of them becoming hurricanes, and three to five of those reaching Category 3 "major" status or higher.
We've already seen seven named storms, two of them hurricanes -- and both hurricanes were, without question, "major" storms -- having hit Category 5. What will the rest of the season produce? Some forecasters have downgraded their expectations, slightly. But as we hit the peak of the season, there's still a lot of time for storm activity.
