A "potentially catastrophic" Hurricane Felix made landfall this hour after growing into a Category 5 monster just before hitting land near the border of Nicaragua and Honduras in Central America, the National Hurricane Center reported at 8 a.m. NOAA

The storm had weakened to a Category 4 before regaining strength and storming ashore with 160 mph winds in the early dawn.

While tourists have evacuated, many natives remain in the path of the storm. Guatemala and Belize are also in the storm's path, though it is expected to weaken over land.

This is the second Category 5 hurricane to strike land in two weeks. The last before these was 1992. Felix is the 11th Category 4 or 5 storm of the season, worldwide.
