At 5 a.m., Hurricane Felix and its swirling 155-mph winds were sitting on the doorstep of Nicaragua and Honduras, fast moving toward landfall at the border -- possibly as a Category 5 monster storm.
Even now, as a Category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Felix was labeled "extremely dangerous" by the National Hurricane Center. In the three hours or so it will take to travel the final 65 miles to land, it could feed off enough warm water to re-gain Category 5 strength, forecasters said. NOAA
Other countries that may be affected include Guatemala and Belize. Storm surges of more than 18 feet could produce "large and dangerous battering waves," especially to the north of landfall, the Hurricane Center said. Up to 10 or 20 inches of rain might fall in some areas, producing "life-threatening flash floods and mud slides."
