New Jersey: New green frontier?

Share
By Dan Shapley

New Jersey is a vision of the future, when it comes to environmentally-friendly cities. Yes, that New Jersey, land of the ubiquitous turnpike, the first state that comes to mind when "smokestack" or "traffic" enters the conversation. Indeed, Smart Growth America says we should look to Jersey City as a model. It's population is growing. It's turned away from its blighted, industrial past. And you can get around there pretty well without a car. In other words, it isn't housing developments sprawling out into the countryside - a development model of a different kind. By investing in older cities, they can be born again as thriving commercial and residential spaces, preserving the forests for the trees, and farms for the food. Now, that's Jersey Fresh.
