Colbert's turtle rapport

Share

By Dan Shapley

Today's Word: "Leather-backing." Scientists are calling attention to the plight of endangered leatherback turtles today, as they launch The Great Turtle Race with a little help from faux-pundit Stephen Colbert. Fixed with satellite trackers, 11 female leatherbacks will leave Costa Rica today, en route to feeding grounds off the Galapagos Islands 1,200 miles away. One of them, dubbed Stephanie Colburtle by students working on the project, won the admiration - for obvious reasons - of the wry Comedy Central celeb. With pitch-perfect gracelessness, Colbert referred to the 2,000-pound giant turtles "eagles of the sea." The 100 million-year-old species has been in sharp decline in the last decade, roughly coinciding with the rise of Stephen Colbert's career. Probably coincidence.
