A global cadre of scientists will spend the next six weeks as explorers in one of the world's least traveled regions — the Antarctic sea ice zone — as part of the International Polar Year, an international effort to understand the poles.

The importance of this zone has only recently been understood, as the effects of global warming focus experts' attention on the global ocean and air currents that influence and are influenced by the region. The goal of the mission is to better understand how climate change is affecting sea ice, and the complex web of life that it supports, according to the Canberra Times, an Australian newspaper.

Research like this is not only important for understanding the world's climate — how we influence it and how it influences us. It's also exciting. These adventurers will be blogging about their experiences at acecrc.sipex.aq. Imagine being able to read the thoughts of Lewis and Clark in real time, and you get a sense of the value of this blog.
