According to the FDA, Salmonella in pet foods and treats can be transferred to humans handling the food, and by contact with infected pets. Pets with Salmonella poisoning infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. In some cases, pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. The FDA recommends owners of pets who have consumed the recalled product and have these symptoms to contact their veterinarian.
