Senators chastised FDA officials for inspecting just 30 percent of pet food manufacturers every three years during a hearing yesterday. While the Department of Agriculture requires much more frequent checks on meat, egg and milk facilities, the Food and Drug Administration's inspection regimen for processed foods is far less strict. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., had a word for the system for food inspection - of both pet and human foods: "broken."
