Many of the owners of hybrid fuel-electric cars say one of the greatest benefits goes beyond the inherent fuel sipping technology. It's the dashboard gizmo that tells them how pedal-to-the-metal acceleration and herky-jerk braking draw down fuel efficiency. Knowing how driving habits affect fuel economy changes habits, they say.

Now, Nissan Motor Co. will give that knowledge to the owners of conventional fuel cars. It will make fuel efficiency meters standard on all new cars, and redesigned existing models, to promote "more economical driving habits." Nissan estimates the devices will help drivers save 10% on fuel costs.
