Typhoon Sepat, one of the strongest storms in years to strike mainland China, was responsible for at least five deaths in Taiwan and 19 so far in China, according to Chinese state-run media.

The storm is continuing its path of destruction -- spawning tornadoes and mudslides -- despite the evacuation of 900,000 people in coastal areas of China.

The government also sent more than 2 million text messages to residents warning them of the storm danger.
