One of the biggest cyclones in decades to strike mainland China had already decimated the Philippines -- affecting 400,000 according to Chinese state-run media -- and cut power to thousands in Taiwan.

Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated in coastal China as the storm bears down.

Once a Category 5 storm, it has lost strength but remains a "major" Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of more than 125 mph.
