Monkeys Will Be Sold For Food

23-Year-Old Ban On Selling Malaysian Primates Lifted; Endangered Macaques In Cross Hairs

Malaysia has lifted its ban on hunting and exporting primates, reportedly so it can sell more endangered macaques to Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong -- where monkeys are a prized exotic food and sometimes pet.

The monkey is protected by Malaysian law and listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as CITES. That treaty is designed to prevent the trade of animals and plants threatened with extinction.
