Monsoon Devastates North Korea

Hundreds Dead Or Missing From Flooding; International Aid Sought

Share

By Dan Shapley

North Korea revealed the extent of damage from weekend monsoonal rains that, according to state-run media, may have killed as many as 200, flooded the homes of 63,300 people and led to significant property damage, according to various press accounts.

The country's isolated status -- having been branded part of the "Axis of Evil" by President Bush, who has only recently engaged in more substantial talks with the Communist regime -- complicates the delivery of international aid, which North Korea has requested.

The monsoon this year across southern Asia has been extreme. It started early, produced successive waves of deluges and brought devastation and death to Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam and other nations in the region.
