Flossie Now A Tropical Storm

Hurricane Downgraded, But Warnings Remain For Big Island Of Hawaii

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center downgraded Hurricane Flossie to a tropical storm, and removed the hurricane watch from the big island of Hawaii overnight. Tropical storm warnings and flash flood watches remains in effect.

As of about midnight local time (6 a.m. EDT) the storm was about 175 miles south-southwest of Hilo, Hawaii and moving in a west-northwest direction. Central Pacific Hurricane Center

With maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and higher gusts at present, forecasters expect the storm to continue to weaken. Surf of 10-20 feet have been reported in some locations. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph had been recorded, and as much as four inches of rain is expected.
