Hurricane Flossie, the unexpectedly ferocious storm, could strike Hawaii around 2 p.m. local time (8 p.m. EST), forecasters now say. Once thought to be a weak storm, it grew into a Category 4 monster with sustained winds of 140 mph.

Once thought to make landfall as a Category 1 storm, it is now expected to be a Category 2 storm whose tropical storm-force winds extend 110 miles from the storm's center. A hurricane watch is in effect for the big island of Hawaii and other islands may be threatened if the storm changes course.
