Cell Service? Yes. Cell Towers? No.

Where "Not In My Backyard" Meets The Suburban Backyard

Share

By Dan Shapley

As cell phone customers demand better service in their suburban homes, cell phone companies are running into an obstacle to providing it: cell phone customers in their suburban homes.

Cell phone service requires height, and people often don't want to look at tall cell phone towers, though they often want the service. Some innovative towers, such as those along certain scenic highways, appear tree-like so they can blend in with the landscape. Some landscapes, advocates say, are just too scenic or historic to accept a new metallic neighbor.

Where to draw the line? A beautiful environment is why many people move to the country. When they demand the same services they get in the city, it produces sometimes difficult trade-offs.
