Hurricane Flossie, At Category 4, Nears Hawaii

Unexpectedly Strong Storm Still 600 Miles Off Shore

Hurricane Flossie, which has developed into an unexpectedly ferocious storm, is still 600 miles from the Hawaiian Islands, but moving in that direction.

As of late Sunday night, Hurricane Flossie was 600 miles to the southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. According to published reports, the storm was expected to be reduced to a category 1 by the time it reached Hawaii. NOAA
