With the third day of a heat wave settles in across the United States, with the majority of the country baking in 90-plus degree heat, at least three people have died so far because of the heat, according to a report today in USA Today.

Each year, 1,500 die because of extreme heat, making it the top weather-related killer, according to the National Weather Service.

The United Nations this week warned that extreme weather events -- particularly heat waves and floods -- will become more common as global warming continues. A study released this month found that heat waves in Europe are lasting twice as long as they did just a few decades ago.

Global warming. Heat Waves. Illness and death. It's direct a chain of causality.
