The London Independent has compiled a list of the 10 most endangered mammals around the world -- ranging from the obscure (Cuba's solenodon, a primitive insectivore, and the Madagascar aye aye) to the familiar (Brazil's Golden lion tamarin, a handsome staple of many zoo installations, the Pacific Ocean grey whale and the polar bear).
They range from the awe-inspiring (Javan rhinocerous, the Iberian lynx, and the Ethiopian wolf) to the ugly (Vietnam leaf-nosed bat). What they have in common is their predicament, and -- unfortunately -- their common predicament with hundreds of "lesser" species of birds, fish, insects, plants and other forms of life that are similarly endangered.
