Seismologists are trying to determine which came first -- the mine collapse that trapped six coal miners in Utah, or the earthquake detected on seismic instruments.

The mining company Murray Energy Corp. is trying a multi-faceted rescue attempt, in hopes that it can reach the miners in time. Questions will then inevitably turn to the cause of the collapse, and whether it could have been prevented.

An earthquake is an extraordinary circumstance, but it could be that some problem in the mine caused the collapse, which was so big it shook the ground like an earthquake.
