A fire in Santa Barbara County, California, has been burning for two months. It burns slow some days and flares up others, and all in all has claimed 44,000 acres in Los Padres National Forest.

It is one of 57,935 fires that have started this year, and in all, they have claimed 5.3 million acres of land, mostly in the Western United States, where drought, record heat and unusually small snowpacks in many mountain areas left the region prone to fire.

As of Sunday there were 41 active wildfires burning in eight states, all but one of which (New Jersey) was in the West. Idaho and Montana are currently the most fire-active states, with 12 and 15 fires, respectively.
