Two Nevada dairy farms have dumped milk out of concern that their cows drank radioactive water, and that they are producing radioactive milk.
Tests results revealed Friday showed that several wells in the area of Fallon are contaminated with polonium-210, a naturally occurring radioactive element that is known to cause cancer.
It is the same element used to poison Alexander Litvinenko, the Russian spy whose death in a British hospital caused an international sensation. Levels detected in water in Nevada wells is far below the dose needed to cause effects seen in Litvinenko.
The Food and Drug Administration is testing samples of milk from the dairies, and results are due today.
