$20 Billion: A Lot Of Pork For A Water Bill

House Overwhelmingly Passes A Bill Good For Water Projects, Bad For Good Governance

By Dan Shapley

The House overwhelmingly approved a $20 billion bill full of 900 fresh water projects around the country that have as much to do with pleasing constituents back home by bringing home some bacon, as they do with clean water.

While many of the projects will have clear benefits in local communities, the method is an indication of the pure madness of Washington: As the White House put it, "a $14-billion Senate bill went into a conference with the House's $15-billion bill and somehow a bill emerged costing approximately $20 billion."

It appears veto-proof bipartisan support in this case is a euphemism for political self interest.
