Mattel, the parent of Fisher-Price, has recalled nearly 1 million plastic toys that were painted with lead paint in Chinese factories.

The toys include many popular cartoon figures, like Dora the Explorer and Elmo and other Sesame Street characters. Parents are urged to take these toys away from their children, contact Mattel, and get a voucher for a toy of equal value. To read the recall notice, click here.

Call the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (800-638-2772) or Mattel (800-916-4498) for more information. Lead poisoning, which has been on the wane in the United States since bans on leaded gasoline, lead paint and other products went into effect decades ago, still affects nearly 50,000 children in the United States.

It can cause brain damage, limiting the IQ of children or leading to other neurological problems.
